The Mathematics Recovery Project has been developed specifically to help children who are having difficulty with their mathematics, particularly in the first two years of their education.

Distinctive features of the programme are:

• early identification of low attainment
• intensive individualised teaching for the child
• training for the classroom teacher in specialised methods relating to early mathematics learning.

Knowledge of Mathematics Recovery theory and practices allows teachers and parents to:

• understand the development of a child's number sense
• enter into supportive dialogue with the child
• help the child construct mathematics knowledge and have success in mathematics

Video recording is used by teachers to help them understand the child's thinking and the methods used to solve numerical problems.
