Family Literacy

Intensive FLLN courses are based in schools, extended schools and children's centres and are run by a class teacher and an adult tutor.

The curriculum for these programmes covers children's early literacy, language and numeracy development and can help to bridge the gap between home and school practice. Many underachieving children come from homes where school literacy is not the norm but they have a range of skills using environmental print and popular culture. Teachers, therefore, need to help the children and families to recognize and value the skills they bring from home and to transfer these to the activities which are expected in school. Without this bridge, many children will continue to be unable to access school literacy and numeracy and will continue to underachieve.
